$40 billion is spent each year by dieting Americans and the businesses promoting them. Frontline correspondent, Steve Talbot, a 50 year old 210 pound man (who is on the verge of obesity with a BMI of 29) went behind the scene of popular diets of today to discover the secrets of weight loss.
Despite the 90’s being the beginning of the “low fat” era, 2/3 of Americans are still considered to be overweight. These Americans are not only gaining weight, but risking their health as well. Osteoporosis, diabetes, and cardiovascular problems are all factors of obesity. Since the beginning of the “low fat” era, businesses have created “low fat” versions of the foods that are bad for us. Oreos, Lays potato chips, and Edy’s ice cream are all prime examples. Although producers of these products do remove the fat, they end up replacing it with more carbohydrates which is just as bad. They increase the calorie amount so you’re really only eating something with 6 calories less than the original.
Americans need to just monitor their portions. Back in the 50’s, people could eat almost whatever they wanted and they would still be of average weight, because they were active. But because of technology in todays day in age, people are much lazier and dependent on forms of entertainment not requiring any physical activity whatsoever. If people really want to lose weight, they can. just eat healthy (not depending on “low fat” foods) and exercise. It really isn’t as difficult as people make it out to be.

Wow!
I totally think that this was a good choice in topics. Many of the topics range from politics to the media. One that doesn't seem to get much attention are the rates of over weiight people in America. I think that this was a great article, and thanks for sharing it with me and everyone else.
